Despite working in a school I still don't buy into the idea that university/college is an essential to success for everyone. Here are just a few examples:-
Student A wanted to be a mechanic, parents insisted on A levels first, by the time these were done student was too old to get an apprenticeship. Now works in car showroom doing admin work.
Student B Wanted to work in a travel agents, was advised to go to college, once finished in college, travel agents wouldn't take her as they run their own course & she was too old. Now works in a call centre
Student C Wanted to work in a bank call centre, went in at entry level straight after GCSE, still there now & is manager.
Student D Wanted to work in travel agents, went in after GCSE, is now store manager.
So do check with the companies what they require & don't get too drawn in to the 'poverty is the only alternative to college' panic.
Not one of my kids went onto full time college & they are all doing extremely well for themselves doing jobs they enjoy & no they aren't included in the list above.

This is so true - my DD is just ending year 9 so we still have a couple of years for her to decide.
OH's cousins were the "stars" of his family as they both went to Uni - the boy is now in a rocak band but heavily into drugs, the girl eventually left uni aged 24 and now helps out at a dog shelter!!! We used to get sick of hearing about how well they were doing at school etc, strangely their parents dont mention them so much now lol.
Oooh - sorry didnt mean to be anonymous!
